Real Steel Blu-Ray DVD movie review and smartphone ringtones

We’re not given the year, the location or the reality o Real Steel. It really doesn’t matter, we’re thrust right into the action, a re-framing of our reality perhaps, where humans no longer box, trucks have pop-up touch-screen controls and advanced robots are the masters of the ring. For many, Real Steel pays homage to a bevy of sci-fi movies and imaginations that have come, gone or is coming.

Yet, Real Steel, isn’t about the sci-fi or robots. The story is about a “has been” father and a persistent son and their way of coping and reuniting vicariously through robot boxing. This is the key connection that the movie makes with the audience. How do I know? I scoured the web and most of user reviews I’ve read certainly pointed this aspect of the story out.

Even if you didn’t care much about that, there was a story of every boy in the world and their robots. This is what tapped my inner-child, I remember my time with Mazinga and other cool ass robots growing up. Damn, wouldn’t it be awesome to have a robot 5 times your size that goes to bat for you? Literally!

The boxing sequences were amazing, I wanted to step in the ring and give Zeus, the antagonist robot in Real Steel, a few uppercuts! Where’s Paquou?

This is not a critic’s movie by any stretch of the means, it’s pure family entertainment. There’s nothing wrong with that.

BTW: The new kid, Dakota Goyo totally rocked the movie, remember he nailed the part of young Thor. You could tell he was having so much fun, pain-in the-ass kid to soulful yearning all in one. You felt his energy and passion. The director, Shawn Levy really worked the cast nicely and of course, Hugh Jackman was terrific and actually liked the “wouldn’t bet on you” character he played, it’s a different role for him.

I highly recommend getting the Blu-Ray, the movie coupled with the special features make the DVD a terrific buy and I don’t normally recommend buying just any DVD.

With about 32 days to go and my wife and I heading out to Cancun soon, I thought I’d get ahead of the eight ball by sharing my favorite event that comes every four years. Yes, the 2012 Summer Olympics will be in my favorite city London and it’s being redone from end-to-end.

But what’s the Olympics without ringtones? We’ve got all these android smartphones clamoring to be heard, not to mention iPhones from Apple.

I posted a ringtone back in August of 2008, check it out:

Olympics Theme Ringtone - The Olympics Fanfare score which is now part and parcel of the Olympics was actually composed by John Williams in 1984 for the Los Angeles Olympics. I did some digging around and guess what? I found a host of cool videos from past Olympics:

Victor Vogel does the opening for the 1976 Montreal Olympics (I was there!): http://usolympic.org/video/video/235

The London 2012 Olympic mp3 ringtone is really free. Please remember that uploads and side loading are your responsibility. Check with your provider whether it’s T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon or Orange to ensure you’re not charged anything to send the Olympic theme ringtone to your mobile device, Android smartphone or iPhone.

Hunger Games Movie Review and Ringtones

If there’s a place or a future you would want to spare your children, then the time depicted in Hunger Games would be the one. Lionsgate’s latest science fiction movie broke a record coming in fifth for a non-sequel movie during opening night, raking in $68.3 million. That’s not all, it grossed $155 million opening weekend making it third best opening ever. Hey, it’s a clear challenge to the Twilight series.

The Hunger Games offers a bevy of sound effects and interesting ambient noises worth “ringtoning” for your smartphones whether you’re an iPhone or Android user. We’ll certainly try to hunt them down for you, so always check back with us. In the meantime, I think you’ll be appreciative of the two free The Hunger Games ringtone we’ll be offering you.

But before you go ringtone happy let’s discuss how Lionsgate, with Gary Ross at the director helm hit a home run. First of all, The Hunger Games set the characters and tone immaculately, let’s be real this is a teeny bopper sci-fi story so don’t expect Christopher Nolan’esque intellectual story weaved into an action movie. However, we believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised with The Hunger Games movie overall as it delivered on emotion, despair and triumph all in an epic way as you can only do in a science fiction universe.

The adaptation of Suzanne Collins‘ novel is pretty awesome and we don’t believe it could’ve worked without the cast. Jennifer Lawrence who played Katniss Everdeen, has usurped our Twilight star Kristen Stewart, because she can act, is way cuter and her character is relevant to current events (Sandra Fluke connection on Daily Beast). The basic premise of the story is a future earth where children, boys and girls, are forced to fight as “tributes” by a tyrannical government. Wes Bentley shines as Senca Crane, shepherding the “tributes” through an all or nothing gladiator’esque battle.  The Hunger Games movie includes Donald Sutherland who blesses the screen in an eerie way, endearing yet clearly insidious way. Is that paradox even possible?

But alas, Jennifer Lawrence makes The Hunger Games rock, don’t believe us? Check out these cool shots below.

Taylor Swift isn’t our favorite artist but Eyes Open is pretty cool, has a good slow opening and builds up throughout the track. So we did cut to the chase on this ringtone, trimmed the track to it’s essential and I think you’ll like it. The second ringtone is the Mocking Jay, it’s a simple four note tune that even now gives me chills. The link below actually takes you to iTunes, it’s free and it’s chilling!

Haywire movie review and free ringtone

Kicked off the New Year with Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, Haywire. In case you didn’t know, Soderbergh is the man behind quite a few blockbusters, Traffic and the Ocean’s franchise. Just two examples of my favorites, more importantly, I had to check out the famed Gina Carano. I’m a big fan of Carano, she’s a force of power in the ring, is she the same on the screen? If Gina wasn’t enough of a eye candy for you, the roster of high profile veteran actors such as Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas and Ewan McGregor should have pulled some additional traffic to see the movie. Of course, Channing Tatum was the boy candy to appease the guys who came to see Gina ‘er the movie, .

So here’s the premise of the movie, a black ops soldier finds herself double-crossed by her handlers. Her real mission is to find out who is responsible and make them pay for it. Yes, the story isn’t super original but here’s what made it really interesting. I cautiously recommend the movie, it’s got the indie flavor but with Bourne Supremacy style action.

Now the the Haywire music score was straight out of the Jackie Brown era, it totally blew me away. David Holmes is the man behind the free ringtone I’ve just slice and spliced for you all.

Ten minutes into the movie, I also realized how raw the footage and acting was. In fact, the fight sequences had zero effects yeah including sound effects. You could feel the pain, the bruises coming on and boy did it look good. Again, while the story isn’t terribly innovated it was solid, clearly designed to support the “naked” action and intensity of what I think Soderbergh was striving for. Here’s a set of pics paying homage to Gina and her cast.

Now for David Holme’s killer ringtone. Home’s actually began as a DJ, remixing tracks from the greats like U2 and Ice Cube. Danny DeVito had Holmes cut the score for Out of Sight, the interesting and cool movie with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez.

The theme from Haywire is roughly 30 seconds ripped for high definition cutting right into when the funky beat kicks in. I’ve provided the mp3 as well as the iPhone version of the free ringtones for you all.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie review and wallpapers

I’m going to take a break from ringtones and share my latest movie indulgence with you all. Let it be known that ringtones and movies go hand-in-hand! Anyway, I imagine there are dire hard fans of the Planet of the Apes amongst our readership. Personally, I’m not one of them but I maybe now! The movie I watched was Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and let me tell you fans and non-fans alike, it is a terrific movie. The latest in the Planet of the Apes franchise as a film left me with three fascinating thoughts:

  1. Being humane can overpower the effects of brutality and torture
  2. Power of constraint is an overwhelming psychological force
  3. Genetic manipulation leads to unforeseen consequences

What can I say, a franchise that (excluding the original Planet of the Apes series) is known for its campy cartoons and people in ape suites completely surprised me this weekend. I might add it surprised my wife too! Rise is directed by Ruper Wyatt, a relative unknown and penned by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an origins movie that sets up how the world got the way it did before the Planet of the Apes. It reveals something else too, how the human world in its pursuit to change nature shifts the course of evolution forever.

The movie stars James Franco, Frieda Pinta (Slum dog Millionaire) and Andy Serkis, Rise of the Planet of the Apes stitches a fascinating world full of science, drama, suspense, action and inspiration. In the depths of a tense and slowly escalating story line, we have weaved into all of this Cesar, played by Serkis, who is borne of a scientists desire to alleviate a terrible disease afflicting his father, Alzheimer’s. Cesar is befriended by humans but is protected and as the scenes progresses and Cesar matures he is exposed to the irony of his existence, the range of human animosity to the unknown and his struggle to learn more about who we is.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes explains how the world got to become the way it was when Charleston Heston’s character sets foot on Planet of the Apes back in 1968. The depth of the movie’s storyline, special effects and strong character development made Rise a very engaging and powerful movie. While it was entertaining, it spurred intellectual conversation and considerable introspection into who we are as a society and how we treat each other and all of earth’s animals.

I imagine Rise will usher in a bevy of nature against humanity movies and why not? Maybe it’s back to basics for our civilization? Who knows?

Mission Impossible ringtone of theme from original TV show

Are we getting close to July 4th? Yeah? Wow, already? Oh how time flies! I’m reminded of time particularly when I reach into the classic television show ringtone chest trolling for the 30 second ringtone for you all folks. I know, we haven’t posted many classic television theme ringtones of late but today is our lucky day. The Mission Impossible TV series theme will be transposed into the Mission Impossible ringtone.

We get a lot of folks from around the world these days. So for those who don’t know, Mission Impossible is a classic television show which was created by Bruce Geller the same guy who produced Clint Eastwood’s television series, Rawhide.

What made Mission Impossible particularly memorable was it’s main theme, composed by Lalo Schifrin with musical ingenuity combined with a off tempo yet catchy rhythm which actually works really well as a ringtone. The tempo used for the Mission Impossible theme was groundbreaking for mainstream, let’s see, one-two quick pause one-two-three. The riff is so cool that you don’t even think about the weird tempo!

Let’s face it the main theme rounded out the classic television show. Mission Impossible was re-instated in 1988 with little success but then was truly transformed and reinvigorated on the big screen by Tom Cruise and Paramount. Tom took a break from MI but we’ll soon be graced with MI4!

The Mission Impossible ringtone would be a great addition to any phone.

Mission Impossible main theme (523kb, MP3 ringtone)

The Mission Impossible ringtone is offered for free in mp3 format that will work on Google Android smartphones and the iPhone 3, 3g, 3gs and 4. You should side load to any Samsung/HTC/Motorloa Android, Windows 7 mobile smartphone or iPhone in order to set it up as your ringtone. iPhone users need only download the Ringtone Expressions (formally iPhoneRingtoneMaker) which we’ve covered in a previous post. Hawaii Five-0 2010 CBS television theme song mp3 ringtone

Hawaii Five-0-hero-imageOk, so it’s no big surprise to those who know me that I’m a big fan of the original Hawaii Five-0 television show. So a new version of the television series has been out for  a few seasons now. So, what about this new version? What do we at FreeRingtonesFYI.com think of the remake? Of course it helps that every scene in the Hawaii 5-O 2010 reboot is spectacular. Yup, and I’ve been to most of the spots they show in Honolulu. Certainly haven’t been to the really local areas but I have stayed at the Hilton Hotels which they always seem to feature in the show!

Anyway, my wife has been going on about how I should post a Hawaii Five-0 ringtone. Of course that’s a great idea given all the other classic television show ringtones we’ve posted in the past. But the problem with Hawaii 5-0 was that I was torn between the original theme versus the new one. The original Hawaii Five-0 theme was composed and arranged by Morton Stevens who also scored a few of the episode music. Now while the new one is pretty much the same, the instruments and production quality have been upgraded and there is a bit of freshness to it. So given Free Ringtones FYI audience is a newer bunch, I figured let’s do a Hawaii Five-0 2010 theme ringtone. If folks love it then we can throw up the original theme in a ringtone format.

For those are not aware, Hawaii Five-0 2010 debuted on CBS, the same network that aired the original version of the television show. Like the original version, it follows an elite state police unit/task force set up to fight crime in the state of Hawaii though most of the scenes are in Honolulu. It premiered on Monday, September 20, 2010, 42 years to the date from the premiere of the original show, September 20, 1968. On October 21, 2010, CBS announced that Hawaii Five-0 had been given a full season order of 24 episodes.

So now you know that Hawaii Five-0 2010 is a CBS reboot of the popular television show. The new show stars Alex O’Loughlin who plays Steve McGarrett, Daniel Dae Kim who is reincarnated as Chin Ho Kelly (originally play Kam Fong) then Scott Caan who poses as Danny ‘Danno’ Williams. Finally, a slight departure from the original but my favorite of course is Grace Park who plays Kono. Kono basically gets a sex change since the original Kono was a guy played by Zulu (beach boy and DJ back in the days.)

Here’s our homage to Grace Park

Hawaii 5-0 Television Theme 2010 (1.17MB / MP3 ringtone): The new ringtone theme from Hawaii 5-0 is redone with studio musicians with a few of them from the original line-up back in 1968. The Hawaii 5-0 ringtone is perfect as it’s fast paced, upbeat and tense. The new version was shortened to 30 seconds!

These are free ringtones in mp3 format that will work on Android smartphones and the iPhone 3, 3g, 3gs and 4. You should side load to any Google Android, Windows 7 mobile smartphone or iPhone in order to set it up as your ringtone. The free Hawaii Five-0  ringtones are really free. iPhone users need only download the Ringtone Expressions (formally iPhoneRingtoneMaker) which we’ve covered in a previous post. The software creators are Gx5.

TRON Legacy movie ringtones in mp3 format for iPhones, Windows Mobile and Android smartphones

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (4 votes, average: 3.25 out of 5)

Yes, it is time for a slightly nostalgic and different type of science fiction ringtone and movie review! I just picked up the latest TRON Legacy movie on Blu Ray and thought I’d share my thoughts about the movie and a few ringtones from the movie.  First off, no, the science fiction movie, TRON Legacy is not a remake of Tron from 1982. Rather, it’s a continuation, picking up where the last movie leaves off several years later. The new movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde (oh and she’s a hottie!).

The prodigal son of a virtual world designer Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) goes looking for his father and ends up inside the digital world that his father designed. He meets his father’s creation turned bad and a unique ally who was born inside the digital domain of The Grid.

Of course all of your favorite characters from Disney’s original Tron make appearances, Tron is back played by a CGI’d Bruce Boxleitner and redeems himself. The special effects in the new movie are spectacular and while I wasn’t keen on the story, it was simple enough that it didn’t get in the way of the overall TRON Legacy presentation and music.

The original Tron, boiled down, had a social message re: beware of technology. It may not seem like a big deal now but given where we were back in the 80s with regards to technology, the stories cautionary tale about the entrapments of technology was ground breaking in and unto itself.

TRON Legacy topped the opening weekend box office with more than $43 million but it fell short on expectations as Disney had hoped for $50 million. The fact is the original Tron only made $8 million back in 1982, over a 500% improvement in top-line revenue! Not too shabby!

What made TRON Legacy shine was the soundtrack, and unfortunately the creators and the work received very little recognition. So to that end the ringtones in mp3 format are an ode to these creators who made us proud and kept with the heart and soul of Tron.

Music was composed, arranged and scored by none other than my favorite Daft Punk, an electronic music duo powered by French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter.

TRON Legacy Daft Punk Track Listing

1. Overture
2. The Grid
3. The Son of Flynn
4. Recognizer
5. Armory
6. Arena
7. Rinzler
8. The Game Has Changed
9. Outlands
10. Adagio for TRON
11. Nocturne
12. End of Line
13. Derezzed
14. Fall
15. Solar Sailer
16. Rectifier
17. Disc Wars
18. C.L.U.
19. Arrival
20. Flynn Lives
21. TRON Legacy (End Titles)
22. Finale

I had a really hard time selecting the TRON ringtones for you all. Wow, as I listened to Daft Punk’s amazing creations, trying to find that 20 seconds of awesomeness, I was awe inspired. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the TRON Legacy ringtones:

Ringtone – Overture (MP3 Ringtone / 1.04 MB): You can’t leave Overture ringtone out of the mix. Listen to the ensemble, it’s the original theme from the80s but it dials you in, the world awaits and is yearning for your arrival. This is an awesome ringtone!
Ringtone – The Son Of Flynn(MP3 Ringtone /863KB): Arpeggio laden and full of lush textures, this ringtone is hope. As corny as it sounds, it’s build is uplifting and playful yet serious. I’d set this ringtone to my kids, if I had kids!
Ringtone – The Game Has Changed(MP3 Ringtone/1MB ): Ok, this just shoots adrenaline into me. The drums are BIG, the strings are relentless and the synths are pulsating. It reeks of inflection and uneasiness. And when the modulated synth phases out the synths it’s just kick ass!

Battle: Los Angeles science fiction alien invasion movie

battle los angelesOn the heels of the earthquake in Japan, the tsunami warning from Hawaii to California, Battle Los Angeles set a eerily familiar tone to viewers. Take away the science fiction and aliens, the special effects crew created a devastation that was pretty immersive and believable.

With $13.5 mm at the box office on Friday, Sony’s PG-13 flick, which apparently cost $70 million to produce, well on its way to achieving profitability despite reviews from both critics and movie goers.
The Battle LA was actually pretty good; I’m going to hunt down the alien voice ringtone for ya’ll. I can see the camera shaky bits giving folks a headache, what I couldn’t fathom was how this dude sitting next to me could doze off? Anyway, Aaron Eckhart and the acting crew did a great job, the story was simple, and I like that it got right to the point.

The base of the story centers on a worldwide alien invasion augmented by a handful of marines who are sent out to collect civilians. There have been rumors that the special effects would be identical to Skyline but did not see that AT all.

The one con is that it felt like a US Marine Corps commercial, “the few, the proud, the Marines.” The movie was directed by Jonathan Liebesman, yes the guy who did the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He’s also slated to direct the Clash of Titan sequel, Wrath of the Titans. Should be interesting.

Despicable Me movie ringtones in mp3 format

Despicable Me, oh yeah, the latest in the animated family slash 3D movie craze with a chock full of ringtone options. For those that don’t know, Despicable Me is a computer-animated 3D comedy film from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment that was released in the US on July 9, 2010. The kid’s animated movie is blessed by the voices of Steve Carell (The Office television show), Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove.

What’s cool, and I did not know this, is that it is the first CGI feature film produced by Universal with its new Illumination Entertainment division. Despicable Me was entirely animated in the French studio Mac Guff in Paris, France. The Despicable Me story is basically of a super-villain named Gru (played by Steve Carell) who plans to use three orphan girls as pawns for a grand scheme to take over the world, only to find that their innocent love is profoundly changing him. Despicable Me is a great movie, yup even for adults and I highly recommend it, even if you don’t have kids. It’s available in Blu-ray and regular DVD and if you have a 3D LCD television then you’re in luck, they’ve released a 3D format on Blu Ray as well!

I’ve picked out a couple of hilarious bits from the Despicable e Me movie to serve as your ringtones. Remember, these are free Despicable Me ringtones, ripped in mp3 format and are of relatively high quality!

Despicable Me Does This Count As Annoying? (MP3 Ringtone / 38KB): My favorite ringtone, one of the orphan girls asking Gru whether her cheek pop noise trick is annoying. If you know anyone that annoys you, this one is a perfect mp3 ringtone to attach to that person. Though, not sure if you’d ever share your mobile number with someone who’s actually annoying. Maybe this ringtone is good for that annoying family member??

Despicable Me Minion Laugh (MP3 Ringtone / 158KB): How can we not include a mp3 ringtone of the minion’s giggling. This ringtone is awesome! I set this free ringtone on my iPhone and is perfect as a ringtone alert as well.

Please remember that these are free mp3 ringtones. You should be able to side load to any Google Android, Windows 7 mobile phone or iPhone in order to set it up as ringtone. The free Despicable Me ringtones is really free, no joke. iPhone users need only download the Ringtone Expressions (formally iPhoneRingtoneMaker) which we’ve covered in a previous post.
